A Big Thank You

May you live in interesting times–

Chinese curse

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

Fred Rogers

During this bizarrely unique crisis we’re forced to endure, I was inspired by the accompanying image. Last September I blogged about my appreciation for wait staff, whom I have always greatly admired. But now, in this warped Twilight Zone we now accept as our reality, EVERYONE who continues to simply do their (quite possibly thankless and low-paying) jobs have become heroes. All that’s missing are the capes.

I recently spoke to 2 employees at my local grocery store. They expressed heightened fear and concern for the future as people senselessly strip the shelves bare before others have a chance to shop. I was told the trucks are overwhelmed and keep up the demand.

What is the purpose of all this selfish hoarding? I understand that currently we all need to avoid crowds and practice social distancing (key phrase for 2020, apparently). But unless Charmin factories all over the country spontaneously combusted, what’s with the run on toilet paper?

Dave and I are fortunate to be retired and don’t belong in the workforce anymore….never have I been more grateful for that than now! But for those who have no choice to work during this insane time, I want to express my deepest and most sincere thanks.
